MANILA,Philippines - The US embassy in Manila on Monday condemned the hostage-taking incident in Rizal Park that left 8 Hong Kong tourists dead.

In a statement issued by embassy spokesperson Rebecca Thompson, the US government said it "joins many others in condemning the actions of an alleged former Philippine National Police officer who took innocent tourists hostages in an effort to redress a professional grievance."

The US embassy said that although the incident was not the "act of any terrorist organization,...the reported loss of innocent lives is nonetheless reprehensible and saddens us all."

US Ambassador Harry K. Thomas Jr. said: "Throughout this long day, our thoughts and prayers have been with the hostages held on a tour bus by an individual alleged to be a former member of the Philippine National Police. On behalf of my American and Filipino colleagues at the US Embassy, I offer my heartfelt condolonces to the victims if this horrific incident. We condemn this heinous act; there is no justification for harming innocent people."
