MANILA - Malacañang on Wednesday said it is still hoping that Senator Grace Poe will agree to run as Interior Secretary Mar Roxas' vice presidential running mate.

On the question of whether Roxas should slide down in favor of Poe, a frontrunner in voter preference surveys, presidential spokesperson Edwin Lacierda stood by Roxas as the one who is "in the best position" to continue "Daang Matuwid (Straight Path)."

Lacierda said the "torch has been passed" to Roxas, referring to the President's endorsement.

Meanwhile, the Palace reiterated that it will not use the 2016 budget for political purposes.

Lacierda said Roxas will not use government funds to boost his candidacy.
