MANILA Philippines - President Benigno Aquino III stood by weather bureau PAGASA but said he will check Albay Gov. Salceda's claims that the weather forecasting agency did not give timely information on the track of tropical storm Juaning.

"'Yung sa PAGASA, the overall sentiment, in general, across the country, has been [that] they have been on the ball. 'Pag sinabing uulan, uulan. Pag sinabing malakas ang ulan, malakas talaga ang ulan. I don't see any reason to… we'll check to see if there's validity but I don't think at this point in time I have seen any evidence that they were not on the ball," Aquino told reporters.

Aquino said he texted Salceda yesterday to inquire if the governor was able to get assistance from the Office of Civil Defense but Salceda did not reply.

The President also learned of the death of Salceda's mother and extended his condolences.

"Siguro titingnan natin, ano, at pag-aaralan natin kung may legitimacy doon sa claim niya although ang dami talagang areas affected doon at saka under stress si governor. Perhaps 'pag huminahon nang konti. Kahapon tinext ko siya, for instance, tinanong ko sa kanya if the OCD, the Office of Civil Defense, and DSWD were assisting him. Unfortunately I didn't get a reply then I found out that… he is also suffering a loss and I extended my condolences to him," Aquino said.
