MANILA, Philippines - Typhoon Basyang's (international codename Conson) death toll has climbed to 53, mostly from Southern Tagalog, the National Disaster Coordinating Council reported Saturday.
Retired major general Benito Ramos, the NDCC executive officer and concurrent administrator of the Office of Civil Defense, said the number of missing has also increased to 85 and the number of injured so far recorded stands at 29.
A total of 45,470 families or 225,495 persons were recorded to have been affected by the typhoon's onslaught and a total of 1,096 families or 5,395 persons remain in temporary shelters.
The initial estimate on the cost of damage incurred by the agriculture and infrastructure sectors has also increased to P114.6 million.
The figure does not include the 3,137 houses destroyed and 22,340 others damaged by the typhoon.
