MANILA – Senator Miriam Defensor-Santiago immediately became one of the most talked about persons on Twitter on Wednesday minutes after she announced in a press conference that she has been diagnosed with Stage 4 lung cancer.

The hashtag “MiriamFight” quickly claimed the top trending spot worldwide and nationwide, while the words “Stage 4” and “Senator Miriam Santiago” landed a spot in the Philippine trends.

Several netizens, including Santiago’s fellow Senators, took to Twitter to express their support for the ill lawmaker and said that they will be praying for her fast recovery.

Senator Sonny Angara, for one, said: “We wish senator Miriam good health and possibly recovery from the cancer she disclosed today, GET WELL PO. Ma'am!!”

Senator Pia Cayetano, on the other hand, lauded how Santiago remained calm despite her shocking announcement.

“Listening to Sen Miriam's live prescon where she announces she has lung cancer. Sen Miriam remains calm and upbeat about beating her lung cancer. Says she just needs to take 2 pils a day,” she said.

Below are some of the netizens’ tweets upon learning about Santiago’s condition.

Santiago said she will undergo chemotherapy – but in the form of a tablet, which she has to take every day.

Santiago has in her medical arsenal top doctors in the country and in the world. She said her sister, who is a doctor in Cedars Sinai in Los Angeles, is in touch with the top lung cancer specialist there.

In the Philippines, the senator is being attended to by former Health Secretary Dr. Esperanza Cabral and Dr. Ruth Divinagracia.

Santiago earlier resigned from the International Criminal Court due to chronic fatigue syndrome.
