SAN FERNANDO, Pampanga – Despite her illness and continued detention, former President and Rep. Gloria Macapagal-Arroyo will seek reelection for a third and final term in the province’s second congressional district in 2016, according to her lawyer.
Raul Lambino told a recent gathering of the Pampanga Chamber of Commerce and Industry that Arroyo expressed her desire to continue serving her constituents despite her failing health and continued detention.
Arroyo is under hospital arrest at the Veterans Memorial Medical Center in Quezon City on charges of plunder before the Sandiganbayan.
Lambino said Arroyo manifested her plans to seek reelection despite her failing health. He said the former president has been able to work for and look after the welfare of her constituents even while in hospital detention.
Lambino though stressed Arroyo would even do better if she were allowed house arrest.
Lambino and other lawyers had petitioned and urged the House of Representatives to come up with a resolution to allow house arrest for the former President on health and humanitarian reasons.
A petition to allow Arroyo under house arrest either at her La Vista residence in Quezon City or her home in Lubao, Pampanga has been pending before the Sandiganbayan.
Lambino expressed confidence that the Sandiganbayan’s First Division would act favorably on the petition after it asked for Arroyo’s latest medical bulletins, as well as details on the La Vista and Lubao residences.
