MANILA, Philippines - Former Senator Manuel “Mar” Roxas II has accepted an offer from President Aquino to be the new secretary of the Department of  Transportation and Communications (DOTC), according to Palace sources.

Sources said Roxas, Aquino's running mate in the 2010 polls, accepted the offer last night after a 3-hour meeting.

Roxas had declined the DOTC post, preferring the more influential presidential chief of staff position.

Roxas lost to former Makati City Mayor Jejomar Binay in the 2010 vice-presidential race. He has already lodged an election protest before the Presidential Electoral Tribunal.

Roxas will replace Jose 'Ping' de Jesus, whose resignation will take effect on June 30.

Before becoming senator, Roxas was trade and industry secretary of former President Joseph Estrada. He quit in the midst of Estrada's corruption scandals.
