MANILA - The Commission on Elections (Comelec) may automate the October 28, 2013 Barangay and Sangguniang Kabataan (SK) elections in some select areas.

Comelec Chairman Sixto Brillantes said the poll body has appointed Comelec Director Bartolome Sino Cruz as Project Management Office Chief for the Barangay and SK elections and has asked him to prepare the calendar of activities.

Brillantes said the poll body has already begun printing the election returns and will soon start the registration of voters.

"We’re also discussing the pilot [for the use of precinct count optical scan machines] for barangays. The proposal is the entire Metro Manila or one city…," he said.

Brillantes added the poll body wants to make use of the PCOS machines, which have been almost fully paid for. He said Comelec still owes Smartmatic some P270 million.
