MANILA, Philippines - Bagumbayan presidential candidate Sen. Richard Gordon "has accepted the will of the people" and conceded to frontrunner Sen. Benigno Aquino III.

In a statement published at Gordon's official website, he congratulated Aquino and asked the nation to support the latter.

"I would like to congratulate Sen. Aquino for his spectacular victory. I call upon this nation to unite and support him," the statement said.

The former Tourism secretary and current chair of the Philippine National Red Cross (PNRC) gathered 438,908 votes from the Commission on Elections partial results released as of 9:39 a.m. on Tuesday.

Gordon also expressed gratitude to the people who supported him, especially his volunteers.

"I would like to thank everyone who supported me especially my volunteers and those who gave up their limited resources as a manifestation of trust in my brand of leadership and track record," he said.

Gordon also stressed that he ran a "very truthful, straightforward and candid campaign and thought we could run on the basis of our platform, track record and volunteerism."

Despite the loss, the senator lauded the success of the first nationwide automated elections despite criticisms and delays experienced last Monday.

"Today, we have a victory for democracy with the successful exercise of our first nationwide automated election despite naysayers and doubters," he said. - abs-cbnNEWS.com
