MANILA - The Department of Justice (DOJ) refused to heed proposals to elevate Mary Jane Veloso's case to the International Court of Justice (ICJ).

Justice Secretary Leila de Lima said ongoing efforts by government to save Veloso from execution must focus on legal options available to Veloso under Indonesian laws.

Veloso was granted reprieve by the Indonesian government on her death sentence.

She was arrested and tried for bringing in 2.6 kilos of heroin to Indonesia in 2010.

"Let's not talk about this, for now; what is important, and this is what we told the Indonesian government, is that we respect their laws, their legal processes," De Lima said.

The Justice department has formed a task force to explore all legal options to save Veloso from her death sentence.
