MANILA, Philippines - There won’t be a recall election in Taytay, Rizal.

The Commission on Elections (Comelec) has dismissed the petition for a recall election against Taytay Mayor Janet de Leon for failure to meet the requirements.

In a six-page decision released on Wednesday, the poll body said Milagros Monis was unable to secure the signatures from 15 percent of the voting population of Taytay.

The commission said only 24,025 of the 27,341 signatures Monis submitted were verified to be valid. The poll body did not consider the names with no signatures, signatures without names and names without addresses.

“The 24,025 valid signatures constitute only 13.5 percent of Taytay’s voting population, which is 178,006,” the Comelec said in its ruling.

The petition did not refute the certification of the Office of the Deputy Executive Director for Operations on the insufficiency of the valid signatures, the commission added.

Monis filed the petition in January, saying residents have lost their trust and confidence in De Leon.
