PNoy to receive honorary degree from UP

MANILA, Philippines - The University of the Philippines Diliman (UPD) is set to confer an honorary Doctor of Laws degree upon President Benigno Aquino III during the university's commencement exercises on Sunday.

The honorary doctorate will be given to Aquino, "For providing leadership in rallying the people to stamp out corruption, campaigning for institutional reforms, and creating an environment for agencies, including the Armed Forces of the Philippines, to act with dispatch on malfeasance in government, promote the rule of law, and respect people’s constitutional rights," an article in the Diliman UP Date Online said. Aquino will also be the commencement speaker.

The university's 100th General Commencement Exercises will be held at the University Ampitheater on April 17.

According to the university, Aquino will be the 13th head of state, including those from other countries, to receive an honorary Doctor of Laws degree from UP.

Among Philippine heads of state, those who have been conferred an honorary Doctor of Laws are:

- Manuel L. Quezon (March 16, 1929),
- Sergio Osmeña (March 25, 1930),
- Emilio F. Aguinaldo (June 12, 1953),

- Ramón D.F. Magsaysay (April 5, 1955),
- Carlos P. García (April 7, 1959), 
- Diosdado Macapagal (May 30, 1965),

- Ferdinand E. Marcos (May 22, 1966),
- José P. Laurel Sr. (April 20, 1969),
- Corazón C. Aquino (April 20, 1986), and
- Fidel V. Ramos (April 24, 1993).

"Twenty-one summa cum laude will lead more than 4,000 candidates for graduation of which more than 3,000 will receive their undergraduate degrees, 556 their Master’s degrees and 70 will be hooded onstage for obtaining their doctoral degrees," the article said.

The list of summa cum laude is led by John Gabriel P. Pelias, BS in Mathematics, with a CWAG of 1.016. He will also deliver the valedictory address on behalf of the graduating class.

"In addition to the top 21 honors, UPD produced 213 magna cum laude and 771 cum laude. The magna cum laude is awarded to a graduate with a GWA 1.45 and the cum laude for a GWA of 1.75," the article added.
