MANILA, Philippines - Malacañang has sacked an undersecretary of the Department of Defense allegedly without clear reasons.

Undersecretary for Internal Affairs Ariston delos Reyes confirmed Tuesday that he has been terminated, but said the reason was unclear to him.

De los Reyes said he was informed in writing last March 9 by Executive Secretary Leandro Mendoza that he was being recalled from his duties.

He said he asked Defense Secretary Norberto Gonzales about the reasons for his relief. He said the defense chief told him he was not aware of the order.

But on March 15, Delos Reyes was informed by Gonzales' chief of staff that he was indeed being terminated but still offered no explanations.

Delos Reyes was known for his honesty, but made enemies within the department.

He led investigations against other defense officials implicated in an anomalous procurement of helicopters.

He also recommended an investigation against another defense official for dishonesty.

Instead of punishing the erring official, Gonzales subsequently recommended the extension of the official's service.

Delos Reyes, meanwhile, would not categorically say if his termination was connected to the investigations he made against colleagues in the defense department. ABS-CBN News Channel
