MANILA, Philippines - As Filipinos tuned in to their television sets to catch members of the House of Representatives debate and cast their votes on the impeachment complaint against Ombudsman Merceditas Gutierrez, so too was an absentee congressman.
He was not around, but he may as well have cast his vote--over Twitter.
It's no secret that Sarangani Congressman Manny Pacquiao is in Baguio preparing for his upcoming May 7 fight with Shane Mosely in Las Vegas.
But the twitterverse was rudely reminded of his absence in the plenary debates when he himself tweeted that he was watching, and that he found the discussions "interesting".
That tweet triggered a wave of responses, with some questioning his absence.
The most surprising thing about the whole Twitter moment was how @CongMP chose to react to a couple of “tweeps” who questioned his absence.
@CongMP, the Twitter username which Pacquiao said he owns, said: “e Di magreklamo ka Sa Lolo mo” to @momblogger, and followed it up with "e Di magreklamo ka Sa Lolo mong panot hahaha” to @RAndRant.
For some observers of the conversation, they found Pacquiao's behavior on Twitter unbecoming of a lawmaker.
Others, however, chose to defend him and told off people to leave him alone so that he can train in peace.
With the influx of mixed reactions, Cong. Pacquiao later tweeted that he would be deleting his Twitter account.
As of press time, instead of making good his threat of deleting his account, he ended up deleting that last tweet.
House Speaker Feliciano Belmonte Jr. has yet to react on the matter.
