MANILA, Philippines - President Aquino has called for calm before tsunami waves hit the country.

Aquino issued a statement from Singapore where he is on a state visit. He is about to fly home to Manila later today.

Aquino is also in touch with his officials back in Manila, particularly the National Disaster Risk Reduction and Management Council. He hopes government efforts at mitigating effects of the tsunamis will be organized and well coordinated with authorities.

Government is preparing for the possible damages.

The NDRRMC is monitoring and will implement  a response to the imminent calamity and Aquino hopes the public will cooperate.

Government officials have also been asked to immediately inform the public of relevant information.

Earlier, Malacañang appealed to residents in coastal areas set to be affected by tsunamis to evacuate if they are within 10-40 meters of the shoreline.
