MANILA, Philippines – Lipa Archbishop Ramon Arguelles said the impeachment trial of Chief Justice Renato Corona has nowhere to go and must therefore be stopped.
Arguelles alleged that the senator-judges are only seeking media mileage.
"It's boring. Parang hindi totohanan eh, umeeksena lang ‘yung mga pulitiko eh. Gusto lang yata ma-media lang," he said.
The archbishop also believes that the Corona should be tried in a regular court and not in the Senate.
Some of the chief justice's fellow Batangueños, however, are split over calls to halt the proceedings.
“Dapat itigil na ‘yan, mag-concentrate nalang ang gobyerno sa mga problema ng mga tao,” said Francisco Cortes.
William Iliw-Iliw, on the other hand, believes the trial should continue because Filipinos deserve to know the truth.
“Dapat lang ituloy para malaman natin ang katotohanan,” he said.
Meanwhile, Batangas Representative Nelson Collantes, who is one of the 188 congressmen that signed the impeachment complaint, explained that it is important to continue the trial so that Filipinos will know if Corona is guilty or innocent.
"The wheels of justice are turning. It may be slow but it is turning," said Collantes.
Camarines Sur Governor Luis Raymond “LRay” Villafuerte has the same opinion.
"’Yan ang lugar para mapatunanayan kung inosente o hindi ang akusado. So dapat talaga, for all parties, ituloy ‘yan," said Villafuerte.
Villafuerte is also getting the support of the Union of Local Authorities of the Philippines (ULAP) in the call to continue the impeachment trial until the end. -- Reports from Carolyn Bonquin, ABS-CBN News Southern Luzon; ANC
