MANILA, Philippines - The House of Representatives Committee on Justice will recommend to President Benigno “Noynoy” Aquino III to sack the special prosecutors who allowed the forging of the plea bargain of former military comptroller Carlos Garcia.

House Deputy Speaker Lorenzo 'Erin' Tañada told radio dzMM that he and the other members of the committee will recommend the sacking of Special Prosecutors Wendell Sulit, Joseph Capistrano, Robert Callos due to gross negligence and betrayal of public trust.

He said the prosecutors can be fired from office, with the exception of the Ombudsman, who can only be removed via impeachment proceedings.

Under the deal submitted to the anti-graft court last December 16, Garcia pleaded guilty to lesser offenses of direct bribery and violation of Section 4 (b) of the Anti-Money Laundering Act.

The Ombudsman, after some prodding from lawmakers, asked the Sandiganbayan to put on hold any decision on the plea deal.- by Jun Lingcoran, dzMM
