Move over, Marvel: Comic book for voters out 1PCRV's election battlecry Clean, Honest, Accurate, Meaningful and Peaceful elections: CHAMPS

MANILA - The Commission on Elections education and information department is considering using a comic book in their voters' education campaign.

Comelec EID Director and Spokesman James Jimenez said the comic book was produced by the Parish Pastoral Council for its own Voters' Education campaign.

"PPCRV made and sila nagdidistribute ng comic book. Ang theory kasi ng approach ng PPCRV is to make the CHAMPS idea hip, cool at maka-attract ng kabataan ngayon and they did that through creation of superheroes who look like local superhero groups. The heroes are supposed to embody high voter ideals," he said.

CHAMPS is an acronym for PPCRV's election battlecry Clean, Honest, Accurate, Meaningful and Peaceful elections. PPCRV is one of Comelec's accredited citizens' arms for the midterm election.

Jimenez said the comic book shows the triumph of principles over cynicism and corruption.

He said the comic book also has games. "What they did is design board games because it challenges voters to remember certain concepts to move forward. The next question becomes a collaborative effort to answer of they move forward again."

The comic book was done for PPCRV by the  Communication Foundation for Asia. It was announced last January 15.

In its website, the CFA said: "Both real and make-believe heroes are the main players in the media materials that CFA recently produced for the Parish Pastoral Council for Responsible Voting (PPCRV). The materials include a video talk program, a komiks-magazine and a poster."

The CFA said the comic book features the illustrated adventures of four young people as they overcome indifference and get engaged in safeguarding the election.

The 4 young heroes who are mostly students are Jessica Catapang, an 18-year old Pol Sci student and editor of the college paper; Rex Guerrero, the skipper of the varsity taekwondo squad; Marianna Reyes, a senior law student who eats, drinks and breathes law; and Carlito Montes, a computer, math and communications wizard.

"Together, they challenge corrupt politicians who are out to manipulate elections by guns, goons, gold and greed, and they mobilize their fellow youngsters to bring about CHAMP elections".

The CFA website said an entertaining and informative game called "Voters Tsunami" is featured in the center pages. "It is a board game that tests the public's knowledge of Philippine voting processes, and allows those who know the answers to advance in the game."

CFA has also produced a poster featuring a little girl with the message, "Kinabukasan Ko, Nasa Boto Mo" (My Future Depends On Your Vote).
