MANILA, Philippines - The Supreme Court has ordered Lauro Vizconde and his lawyers to prove their allegations that a senior magistrate had masterminded the acquittal of Hubert Webb and 6 others for the massacre of his family in 1991.
It also ordered former Volunteers Against Crime and Corruption founding chairman Dante Jimenez to show cause why he should not be held in contempt for supposedly hurling invectives against the magistrates who voted in favor of the acquittal.
Vizconde, through lawyer Ferdinand Topacio, earlier said they would file an impeachment complaint against Senior Justice Antonio Carpio for “betrayal of public trust and graft and corruption.”
Topacio claimed there are 3 judiciary members who are privy to Carpio’s supposed efforts to convince fellow magistrates to vote for Webb.
He said the 3 do not want to come out in the open because their testimonies might affect the people’s trust in the judiciary.
In a 7-4-4 decision last month, the high court set free Webb, the son of a former senator, and other scions of influential families due to the inconsistencies in the testimony of the star witness Jessica Alfaro.
The SC also quashed today a motion for reconsideration and other motions for intervention due to the double jeopardy doctrine.
