MANILA, Philippines - GMA-7 broadcaster Mike Enriquez and Presidential Communications Development and Strategic Planning Secretary Ricky Carandang are just some of the names being floated as possible senatorial candidates of the Liberal Party in the 2013 midterm elections.
Administration sources said the lineup of possible LP bets in the senatorial elections are: Carandang, Enriquez, Liberal Party chairman Mar Roxas, Presidential Spokesman Edwin Lacierda, Budget Secretary Florencio "Butch" Abad, Justice Secretary Leila de Lima, Congressmen Lorenzo Tañada III, Rodolfo Biazon and Roilo Golez and former party-list lawmaker Risa Hontiveros.
Lacierda, for his part, said he has no plans of running for the Senate and neither is he aware that LP members are floating his name.
One source said the LP may coalesce with other Aquino allies in the so-called Samar group, which are not members of the LP. However it is also possible that Aquino allies like re-electionist Senator Francis Escudero will run as independents.
Escudero and Roxas are seen as rivals for the presidency in 2016. They also belong to the Samar and Balay groups.
The LP was supposed to have its party elections November 7 last year, but it was twice rescheduled to January 7 and then January 17, 2011.
