Gloria Arroyo's ailments: A quick look 1MANILA, Philippines - Former President Gloria Macapagal Arroyo is said to be in delicate condition due to hypoparathyroid and bone diseases, and is currently under hospital arrest while awaiting trial for electoral sabotage.

Atty. Raul Lambino, Arroyo's legal spokesperson, said the Pampanga congresswoman is also suffering from diarrhea, poor appetite and stress.

"Siya ay senior citizen na rin at mahina ang pangangatawan. Nag-iingat sila na di maging permanente ang kanyang karamdaman at di nakadepende sa iniinom na gamot," Lambino said in an interview on ABS-CBN's "Umagang Kay Ganda" on Monday.

Earlier today, it was reported that Arroyo, 64, is also suffering from depression.

A Pasay Regional Trial Court judge issued an arrest warrant against Arroyo after she was charged with electoral sabotage by the Commission on Elections on Friday. This prevented the former President from seeking medical treatment abroad.

Months before she was brought to the hospital for severe neck pain, Arroyo looked "relaxed" and "refreshing," according to some members of Congress.

Here is a quick look at Arroyo's reported ailments:

Cervical spondylosis

Cervical spondylosis is a general term for age-related wear and tear of the discs in the neck. It also contributes to cervical osteoarthritis in the facet joints, or joints that link the neck bones. Symptoms include pain, stiffness and muscle spasms.

The condition is common in people older than age 55. Treatment may include medications, therapy, surgery and the use of soft collars.

Cervical spondylosis may compress one or more of the spinal nerves, reduce the diameter of the spinal canal, and eventually lead to permanent disability.

Hypoparathyroidism is a rare condition in which the body secretes abnormally low levels of the parathyroid hormone. The hormone regulates calcium and phosphorus in the body.

This leads to low ionized calcium levels in the bones and a higher amount of phosphorus. Treatment includes taking supplements to normalize the levels of the two minerals.

Depression is a medical illness that usually requires long-term treatment.

Symptoms include a feeling of sadness or frustration, loss of interest in normal activities, insomnia or excessive sleeping, changes in appetite, fatigue, feelings of worthlessness or guilt, and unexplained medical problems such as back pain or headaches.

Treatment may include home remedies, medications, counseling and therapy.

Diarrhea is a common condition characterized by loose, watery stools that occur more frequently than usual. If it lasts for weeks, it may lead to more serious conditions such as inflammatory bowel disease.

Most cases of diarrhea go away without treatment, but those who have it are advised to replace lost fluid and salts.
