MANILA - Miss Earth 2013 Alyz Henrich of Venezuela arrived Friday in the Philippines, heralding the start of the environment protection-oriented international pageant in the country.

Along with Miss Philippines-Earth Jamie Herrell, Henrich is set to welcome some 90 candidates who will compete for the crown.

Henrich's arrival gave new impetus to the world beauty pageantry which has been beset by uncertainty and cancellations this year.

On Thursday, Binibining Pilipinas-Intercontinental Kris Janson's departure for Jordan was cancelled after the organizers of the Miss Intercontinental pageant announced that they had to reschedule the contest due to security concerns in the region.

The Miss Universe organization, meantime, has yet to officially address reports that it is not holding any competition this year. US media earlier announced that the Miss Universe pageant will be held in January 2015 in Florida.

The Miss Earth pageant is regarded as one of the top pageants in the world, along with Miss Universe, Miss World, and Miss International.

The Miss Earth coronation night will be held at the UP Theater in Quezon City on November 29. It will be aired on ABS-CBN, TFC and Star channels.
