11 grandchildren of Caviteña are OFWs

MANILA, Philippines – A resident of Carmona, Cavite has a strong chance of making it to the Guinness Book of World Records for having the most number of grandchildren at 110.

The 87-year-old Emilia Martillano has 40 grandchildren, 68 great grandchildren and 2 great great grandchildren.

She is known to have the most number of grandchildren in the country.

One of Martillano’s daughters revealed that during election time, local candidates visited their home to lobby for votes.

“Iisa ho kami, lahat kami solid kami. At saka may mga asa-asawa pa kami, mga pamangkin, tsaka napunta sila dito kay inay, yung mga kandidato. kinakausap siya. Sinasabi namin, 'Nay, iisa ang ating iboboto kung sino ang gusto niyo e sinasabi nila sa amin, nakikinig kami,“ said Carmelita Diaz, one of Martillano’s daughters.

Martillano and her deceased husband have 13 children, 2 of whom are overseas Filipino workers (OFW) while 11 of their grandchildren are OFWs.

Martillano, who got married when she was 16, said her husband worked as a farmer, carpenter and blacksmith to provide for their big family.

Currently, a couple from the United Kingdom holds the record for most number of grandchildren with 99.

Meanwhile, after the "TV Patrol" story aired on Monday and Tuesday, a caller claimed to know a grandparent from General Santos City with 139 grandchildren.

The claim could not be confirmed as of posting time.
