MANILA, Philippines - The Board of Regents of the Polytechnic University of the Philippines (PUP) announced Tuesday that President Dante G. Guevarra has been replaced.
In a statement dated July 5, the Board of Regents chaired by Patricia B. Licuanan, also chairperson of the Commission on Higher Education (CHED), said it has considered the report of the Evaluation Committee and has determined that Guevarra failed "to obtain an outstanding rating."
The Board thus did not renew Guevarra's term which ended July 5.
It then appointed Regent Edicio G. Dela Torre as Officer-in-Charge for 2 months while a search for a new President is being conducted.
PUP community protests
This decision did not sit well with many students, employees and teachers of PUP.
They scheduled a big protest on Wednesday, July 6, to oppose the appointment of Dela Torre, whom they alleged would worsen the commercialization of education in the university.
The rallyists are also calling for student representation in the committee tasked to search for a new PUP president.
The protesters also said they are opposing Dela Torre's appointment as it is a Malacañang move to address the clamor of the community for a higher budget for PUP and other state universities.
They also believe there are more qualified people to take over Guevarra's post among the Vice Presidents and Deans of the university.
"Nitong nakaraang ika-4 ng Hulyo ay nagkaroon ng BOR (Board of Regents) meetings. Sa simula pa lamang ng aming pagpupulong sa pangunguna ni CHED Chairman Licuanan ay inirehistro ko na ang pagsama sa agenda ng mga issue naming mag-aaral sa problema namin," said Rommel Aguilar, PUP Student Regent.
