MANILA, Philippines - Supporters of Benigno "Noynoy" Aquino III serenaded and offered their best wishes to the country's 15th President.
Among them was retired SPO4 Nestor Daracan, who prepared and sang 43 songs for the newly inaugurated President outside his family's home in Times Street, Quezon City.
He used to serve Aquino's mother, the late Corazon "Cory" Aquino, as part of the Presidential Security Group (PSG).
Clutching his guitar, Daracan sang, "Si P.Noy ang simula, dama niya ang bawat linya at salita." Aquino recently dropped his nickname, Noynoy, for the slightly informal moniker.
Daracan served Aquino's mom as a security escort for 4 years. He hoped that through his songs, the younger Aquino will be inspired to lead the Philippines toward progress.
Aside from Daracan, residents of Camarin, Caloocan City paid a visit to Aquino to wish him a "blessed oath-taking day" to the tune of the traditional birthday song.
Aquino was sworn in as the Philippines' 15th President on Wednesday afternoon before a huge crowd with high hopes that the son of 2 heroes of democracy can deliver on his promise to tackle entrenched corruption in the country.
Police said about half a million people flocked to the Quirino Grandstand near Manila Bay to watch the ceremony despite heavy rains early in the morning.
Much of the crowd was dressed in yellow, the color of the 1986 People Power revolution that drove dictator Ferdinand Marcos from office and swept Aquino's mother, Corazon, to power. -- Report from Ryan Chua, ABS-CBN News. With a report from Jorge Carino, ABS-CBN News.
