MANILA – More than three decades after the death of her former boyfriend, the late actor Alfie Anido, Katrina Ponce Enrile broke her silence and revealed that she was actually pregnant at the time she lost him.

In an exclusive interview with The Philippine Star columnist Wilson Lee Flores, the daughter of Senator Juan Ponce Enrile said they were already planning their wedding before Anido died, although both of them were clueless about her pregnancy.

“Yes, we were already planning on getting married. We were never on and off, in fact, we were on until the day of his birthday and suicide. I only broke up with him that very moment, just before he committed suicide on Dec. 30, 1981,” she said.

“It was [a very painful loss for me]. It really affected me very much because… we broke up… Do I mention this, actually I was already pregnant when we were planning our wedding,” she added.

However, Katrina revealed that she lost their child in the third month.

“I suffered a miscarriage in the third month, because of all the stress after Alfie’s death. Our family suffered a lot, too, during that time,” she said.

Anido became popular in the 1970s as a matinee idol who appeared in iconic movies such as “Temptation Island” and “Katorse.”

The flourishing career of Anido ended in December 30, 1981, when he reportedly shot himself dead in his home in Bel-Air, Makati.

Asked to comment on reports claiming it was her brother, former Cagayan Congressman Jack Ponce Enrile, who shot Anido, Katrina said: “People can say what they want, they can actually believe what they want, but if I meet my maker I can do so without that as an issue. I really know what happened. I know my brother Jack is innocent. I know the truth. I can meet the Lord and He knows what happened that night, and no amount of anybody saying otherwise will change that fact.”

Despite that crisis, Katrina is grateful for her father and her friends who helped her move on.

“It was my dad who talked to me every day after he came home from the office. He sought me out. He’s a very loving father, very authentic, sincere and caring. My friends, they also never left me. I have a few good friends,” she said.

Following Anido’s death, Katrina said the late actor’s father even gave her a copy of her then boyfriend’s suicide note.

“Alfie’s dad gave me a Xerox copy of the suicide note addressed to him,” she said. “Alfie wrote in the last line of that note: ‘Tell Katrina: I love you.’”

Had not Anido died, Katrina believes they would have gotten back together. “Of course... It was actually a spur of the moment, my breaking up with him. It was just a lovers’ quarrel.”

Katrina said she and Anido were together for almost a year. The late actor proposed to her a month a half before he died.
