Incoming President Rodrigo Duterte has a gift in mind for Rep. Leni Robredo, who is leading both unofficial and official partial tallies in the vice-presidential elections.
Asked by a journalist what he plans to give Robredo, Duterte answered: "Ano bang magandang singsing?"
A journalist replied,"Diamond!"
"Siya ang nagsabi, hindi ako," Duterte said, drawing laughter, during his more than 2-hour-long press conference which started before midnight on Wednesday.
Both Duterte and Robredo are officially single. Duterte's civil marriage to his first wife, Elizabeth Zimmerman, is annulled. Robredo is a widow.
During the campaign, Duterte described Robredo, the widow of the late Interior Secretary Jesse Robredo, as "beautiful."
He also said that if Robredo doesn't win as vice-president, she can be his "assistant president," which is similar to deputy mayors appointed in Davao City.
A spokesman of the incoming President also said Robredo "will not be a flower vase" in the Duterte administration.
