MANILA -- There is no limit for people who want to learn -- even for those who are behind bars.
Twenty student-inmates from the medium security compound inside the New Bilibid Prisons in Muntinlupa City proved this when they earned their Bachelor of Science in Entrepreneurship degree on Tuesday.
Among the graduates are six who have been granted parole.
The inmates were students of University of Perpetual Help System DALTA (UPHSD) Bilibid Extension School in Camp Sampaguita.
Dennis Abrina, media relations officer of UPHSD, posted on Facebook several photos showing the student-inmates wearing their graduation toga with their family members.
The post, which has gone viral since it was posted Tuesday, was shared more than 3,000 times.
In an interview with ABS-CBN News, Abrina said that the student-inmates finished their degree after four years, with an internship program where they had to produce products for the cooperative inside Bilibid like t-shirts with designs like "Galing Akong Bilibid". The shirts are sold to visitors.
"Mostly ng subjects nila ay for entrepreneurship para paglabas nila, puwede na sila mag-negosyo ng sarili, magtayo ng sariling negosyo," he added.
Thirty other inmates also earned computer technology diplomas.
Abrina said the graduation ceremony last April 12 is their company's major corporate social responsibility program.
Since the UPHSD's Bilibid Extension's inception in 1985, the program has produced more than 500 inmate-graduates. Some of the graduates who have been released from prison are now employed.
