MANILA – Hollywood has scored many hits from big-screen adaptations of best-selling books from "The Lord of the Rings" trilogy to the Harry Potter series.

Slowly, Philippine studios are looking at the shelves of book stores for ideas for the next big movie hit. Just this month, Star Cinema announced that it bought the rights to the young adult book, "She's Dating The Gangster," written by Bianca Bernardino for teen stars Kathryn Bernardo and Daniel Padilla.

So, we’ve rounded up a list of books that have been adapted locally for the silver screen, including a new movie that will hit the theaters this month.

1. "ABNKKBSNPLAko?!" by Bob Ong (2014)

Starring: Jericho Rosales, Andi Eigenmann, Vandolph Quizon and Meg Imperial

What it’s about: “ABNKKBSNPLAko?!” (opening on February 19) starts with Roberto Ong (Jericho Rosales) not wanting to attend his elementary school homecoming because of his fear of not living up to others’ expectations of him. He then recalls his days back in elementary, high school and early adult, his adventures with his friends and his secret affection towards his “special someone” in this romantic-comedy based on author Bob Ong’s own life.

2. "Bakit Hindi Ka Crush ng Crush Mo" by Ramon Bautista (2013)

Starring: Kim Chiu, Xian Lim

What it’s about: "Bakit Hindi Ka Crush ng Crush Mo" is about Sandy Veloso (Kim Chiu), an ugly duckling who later receives a make-over from company CEO Alex Prieto (Xian Lim) after being dumped by his former boyfriend. The movie revolves around Sandy’s journey as she tries to get over her past love, and how she deals with new feelings towards boss Prieto.

3. "Ligo Na U, Lapit Na Me" by Eros Atalia (2011)

Starring: Mercedes Cabral, Edgar Allan Guzman

What it’s about: This independent film for the 7th Cinemalaya Film Festival is about a Intoy (Edgar Allan Guzman) who finds himself falling Jenny (Mercedes Cabral), the girl labelled as the most beautiful in their campus. Their relationship later turns into a friend-with-benefits type of situation in this modern take of young love.

4. "Dekada ’70" by Lualhati Bautista (2002)

Starring: Vilma Santos, Christopher de Leon, Piolo Pascual, Marvin Agustin, Carlos Agassi, Danilo Barrios, John Sace

What it’s about: Set during the Martial Law era, the movie centers on a middle-class family. Problems arise when they start getting involved with those in power and those rebelling against the dictatorship, causing complications among the members.

5. "Tatarin" (based on Nick Joaquin’s "Summer Solstice") (2001)

Starring: Dina Bonnevie, Edu Manzano, Rica Peralejo, Raymond Bagatsing, Carlos Morales, Patricia Javier

What it’s about: "Tatarin," based on the short story "Summer Solstice," centers on a ritual done by women to be granted fertility by the gods. The story begins during the St. John’s festival when Dona Lupeng (Bonnevie) becomes intrigued by the ritual taking place and later joins it herself.

6. "Laro sa Baga" by Edgardo Reyes (2000)

Starring: Ara Mina, Carlos Morales, Angel Aquino, Monique Wilson, Maila Gumila

What it’s about: "Laro sa Baga" plays on the taboo caused by lead character Ding (Morales), who becomes infatuated with his stepmother, Carmen (Aquino). He later finds himself falling in love with Dee (Ara Mina), but Carmen does all she can to keep them apart.

7. "Bata, Bata Paano Ka Ginawa" by Lualhati Bautista (1998)

Starring: Vilma Santos, Rosemarie Gil, Cherrie Pie Picache, Dexter Doria, Cita Astals, Angel Aquino

What it’s about: "Bata, Bata Paano Ka Ginawa" is about how single mother Lea (Vilma Santos) adjusts to the changes in her life -- hjer children are growing up, an ex tries to take her children from her. Still she juggles all these despite her continued involvement in a human rights organization.

8. "Sarah Ang Munting Prinsesa" (based on Frances Hodgson Burnett’s "A Little Princess") (1995)

Starring: Camille Prats, Angelica Panganiban, Matt Ranillo III, Jean Garcia, Rio Locsin, Romeo Rivera, Romy Romulo

What it’s about: The movie is based on Frances Burnett’s "A Little Princess," which revolves on the life of young Sarah Crewe who finds herself left at a boarding school. After news that her father has passed away while on a business trip, headmistress Ms. Minchin took all her possessions and made her a servant in the school.

9. "Hihintayin Kita sa Langit" (based on Emily Bronte’s "Wuthering Heights") (1991)

Starring: Richard Gomez, Dawn Zulueta, Eric Quizon, Jackie Lou Blanco, Michael de Mesa

What it’s about: Loosely based on the classic "Wuthering Heights," "Hihintayin Kita sa Langit" is about a couple forced to separate. Because of the difference in their social stature, Carmina’s (Zulueta) family tries everything to keep her from falling in love with adopted boy Gabriel (Gomez).

10. "Maynila: Sa Kuko ng Liwanag" by Edgardo Reyes (1975)

Starring: Bembol Roco, Hilda Koronel, Lou Salvador Jr., Tommy Abuel

What it’s about: The late Lino Brocka's masterpiece is about a fisherman named Julio who travels to Manila to look for Ligaya, the woman he has promised to marry. During his trip, he falls victim to abuses and other troubles, all the while looking for the missing Ligaya.
