Jumpstart the year with the chart-topping electro-pop band known for the hit single "Safe and Sound" as they perform at Ayala Malls this weekend.

I was able to hang out with the music duo to find out more about their show and mall tour this weekend.

Capital Cities is playing live at selected Ayala Malls on January 11 and 12, 2014

Capital Cities

Capital Cities is an American electro-pop duo from Los Angeles, California. It was formed by Ryan Merchant and Sebu Simonian. Merchant and Simonian met in 2008 in Craigslist as composers and formed the band in 2010.

According to Merchant, songwriting is an audio-visual experience for them.

"When we write songs, we want to make a world around the song that includes visuals and music. You can see this in our music videos. So I think it's important to build a world around the song," said Merchant.

Their most popular single to date is "Safe and Sound," which was released as the first single of the band's debut album entitled "In a Tidal Wave of Mystery." According to reports, the album debuted at #66 on the Billboard 200 album chart.

The Official Music Video for "Safe and Sound" has been nominated for a Grammy award for Best Music Video. It has more than 60 Million youtube views

The positive 'feel-good' vibe and creative arrangement of this track made me a fan since the first time I heard it. I really like how the song intelligently used a common pop chord progression and fused it with modern '80s elements, groove and synth pop. The single's music video is also a testament to the audio-video experience that the dynamic duo claims to express in their art.

"Kangaroo Court" is another popular single with a visually stimulating and prosthetically imaginative music video.

"We actually co-directed the Kangaroo Court video and it was really fun. Ryan was a Zebra and I was a lion," said Simonian.

Just recently, "Kangaroo Court" also topped the US Alternative Songs list.

Rock out at Ayala Malls

The electro-pop duo will be doing a live weekend mall tour at selected Ayala Malls.

According to Ayala Land Inc (ALI) Vice President Rowena Tomeldan, Capital Cities' hip and modern image is a perfect fit for Ayala Malls.

"Join us this weekend because this concert is the best way to start 2014. At Ayala Malls, we always want to be ahead of the game, ahead of the trend while we give our loyal patrons a reason to be in our Malls," said Tomeldan.

Merchant and Simonian also expressed how excited they are to meet their Pinoy fans this weekend.

"Based on the action we see on Twitter, I think this show in the Philippines would be one with the best actions," said Merchant.

"Our music has to speak for itself so we're very much looking forward to playing these 4 shows in 2 days. Join us and make sure you stretch before coming 'coz it's a physical tour," added Simonian.
