The rising number of novel coronavirus infection cases in the National Capital Region pushed the government to implement a “community quarantine” in the metropolis, which began Sunday and runs until April 14. The usually crowded Cubao was almost empty on Sunday afternoon with a few people who reported to work, dined and shopped in Quezon City’s bustling commercial hub.

The health department repeatedly called for the public’s cooperation to stay at home in an attempt to prevent the spread of the “severe acute respiratory syndrome coronavirus 2” (SARS-CoV-2), which has claimed 11 lives and infected 140 others.

As Metro Manila malls begin to close shop temporarily beginning Monday, March 16, in adherence to the government’s community quarantine declaration, the labor department is strongly urged to study how workers, particularly the minimum-wage earners, can be assisted during the one month closure.
