Food shorts: New restaurants, Christmas ham, Asian faves

MANILA -- Planning your year-end food trip? Here are some of the newly opened restaurants and promos you might want to try.

1. Asian favorites now in Fish & Co 

Fish & Co recently announced new additions to its menu like the Thai-inspired Green Papaya Salad, a papaya-based salad combined with slivers of sweet mango, tossed with Thai vinaigrette, mixed with shrimp, and chopped peanuts.

For the main dish, you can now order their Black Pepper Beef, tender beef cuts sautéed in the savory combination of sweet and spicy black pepper sauce; or the Black Pepper Crablets, which has been drenched and glazed with delicious black pepper sauce. 

Curry lovers, meanwhile, can enjoy the Chicken Curry Platter, chicken stewed in the house favorite red curry sauce. (There is also a salmon curry version). 

The Singaporean dish Laksa is now available, too -- choose between mussels in or crispy kingfish with laksa. 

Fish & Co has branches at SM Mall of Asia and Trinoma.

2. Huma opens restaurant in S Maison

Huma Mediterranean Cuisine has opened at the upscale S Maison Mall at the Mall of Asia Complex in Pasay City.

Huma Island Resort & Spa's owners Dr. Hamad Al Tuwaijri and his wife Louisa Al Chaer envisions the restaurant to serve simple, fresh and natural Mediterranean dishes. 

With a culinary team headed by Lebanese chefs, Huma serves an array of dishes that use olive oil, vegetables, fruits and seafood. 

3. Thai BBQ opens at Fort Strip

Thai BBQ Original, a franchise that originated in Los Angeles, is now at The Fort Strip in BGC. This casual dining restaurant is best known for its signature BBQ chicken.

The menu also includes BBQ Spare Ribs, Chicken and Beef Sate, Thai Curry Crab, Honey Duck, Crispy Oyster Cake and Pandan Chicken, which are expected to be a hit with Pinoys. 

Thai staples, such as Phad Thai, Pad See Lew and Tom Yum Goong, are also served.

4. Costa Coffee opens at Robinsons Galleria

You can now order your favorite Costa Coffee drink at Robinsons Galleria. The UK-based coffee shop, best known for its handcrafted beverages, also serves different delectable sandwiches, pasta, salad, cakes and pastries. 

This holiday season, Costa Coffee will be offering some of their beverages in discounted prices: Hot Salted Caramel Cappuccino (primo P135, medio P145, massimo P155), ice-blended Frostino (primo P165, medio P175, massimo P195), Black Forest Chocolate Frostino (primo P165, medio P175, massimo P195), Black Forest Hot Chocolate (primo P140, medio P150, massimo P160). 

Costa Coffee has branches in Robinsons Place Manila, Robinsons Place Antipolo, Venice Grand Canal inside Robinsons Selections, Tera Tower Bridgetowne in Q.C. One World Place Bldg. in Bonifacio Global City, Citywalk 1, Eastwood City and The Block, SM North Edsa.

5. How to keep your Plaza Ham fresh for Christmas

To maintain your Plaza Ham's freshness, you have to keep your ham refrigerated if you're not planning to serve it yet. It is, however, best if you consume it within three to five days. 

But if you wish to keep it longer, put it in the freezer. Make sure that you remove it from the box and wrap it in foil to keep it from dying out. 

6. Uma Uma Ramen opens second branch in PH 

Ramen lovers will surely be delighted as Uma Uma opens its second branch at Uptown Parade in Taguig.

Backed by more than 60 years of ramen-making experience, Uma Uma serves MSG-free noodles. To welcome their second branch in the country, Uma Uma introduced its first-ever localized ramen, the Aligue (Crab) Dry Ramen. 

The extended menu also includes savory spicy tantanmen and fresh-from-the-grill yakitori (available in beef, chicken thigh, tsukune (chicken balls), pork belly, cherry tomatoes, and shiitake mushroom). It also has different deep fried dishes like the juicy pork belly, fresh scallops and crunchy prawn kushikatsu. 

Uma Uma Ramen at Uptown Parade is open from 11 a.m.- 11 p.m. on Sundays to Thursdays and 11 a.m. - 2 a.m. on Fridays and Saturdays.

7. Holiday toast with Franzia

Make your holiday toast more festive with Franzia. A box of Franzia, which contains three liters of wine, is perfect for your barkada or office year-end party. You can also serve it on your family reunion.

It is also available in a bottle of wine in 750ml that could serve more than 25 wine glasses. You can choose between California Red or Chillable Red flavors. 

8. Holiday feast with Concha Y Toro 

Pair your favorite holiday dishes with Concha Y Toro wines. 

The Frontera Cabernet Sauvignon, which features a fruit-forward taste with chocolatey aroma, is ideal for enjoyment any time of the day. In terms of value for money, the Casillero Del Diablo is perhaps the most popular. It a perfect for groups who want to have extra fun and enjoyment. 

Marques de Casa Concha, on the other hand, is known for its traditional vineyards and its rich origin. It is popular for its Carmenere, which possesses pronounced flavors of plums, black currants, and dark chocolate. 

Meanwhile, Don Melchor continues to reap awards and recognition from wine experts, such as the 2012 Vintage garnering 96 points by, 93 points by Robert Parker’s wine advocate, and 17+ by Jancis Robinson.

9. Jack ‘n Jill Calbee's new salty, sweet potato chips

Tired of eating the same old flavor of potato chips? Jack ‘n Jill Calbee now offers the all-new, limited edition Salted Caramel Potato Chips and Chocolate Potato Chips.
