MANILA -- Experiencing winter or snow is in every Filipino's bucket list. But for those who are still saving up to fly to that icy destination, there's a place here in Metro Manila where one can experience a white Christmas.

Resorts World Manila (RWM) at Newport City in Pasay recently launched its ICE at Lumina snow attraction, which is set to open to the public on Monday, December 17. With a machine that spews out actual ice or snow, guests can experience the next best thing to real snow.

“We imported the machine and what it does, it creates real snow. When I say real snow, it's not chemical-based; it's ice made of water, so it's safe in that sense for kids. Some use chemical-based and others use soap suds,” explained RWM chief integrated marketing officer Martin Paz.

RWM's winter wonderland is set in a 150 square-meter space located at the Lumina Wallkway. The Christmas-themed walkway is a tunnel of lights that now features the snow room.

“Our theme this year is Whimsical Christmas, which means essentially, playful. We wanted to have a whimsical winter wonderland and Christmas is always a time for cold weather, which we never experience in the Philippines. We wanted to bring that feeling here, even if it's not so big, the feeling is authentic. I've been to Alaska and that really how it feels,” Paz said.

The temperature inside the room reaches sub-zero -- -10C to be exact -- to keep the ice frozen. It features a country cabin, a frozen pond, a wooden bridge, a snowman, stuffed reindeer, and a waddle of stuffed penguins, set against a winter forest.

ICE, an acronym for “Indoor Cold Experience” is open to the public. RWM can enter ICE for free by redeeming a coupon in the RWM mobile app. It is free as well for RWM gold tier members. Members can also enter by presenting P500 worth of single or accumulated receipts, while non-members also need a purchase requirement of P1,000 to get one ticket.

All receipts must be from RWM dining establishments, Newport Mall retail shops, and even from hotels. The receipts must also be dated from December 14, 2018 to January 31, 2019.

The entrance to ICE also features a log cabin and polar bear and penguin mascots for photo ops. Ice cocoa will also be served to have that complete winter experience.

For safety reasons, access is restricted to those with mobility issues and children below three years old. Only 15 guests are allowed inside at a time. Guests can stay inside for a maximum of 10 minutes only.

RWM encourages guests who are planning a visit to bring their own winter gear like winter jackets, gloves, scarves, and hats. For hygiene safety reasons, winter gear rental won't be available.

“We are concerned about hygiene so we're promoting it by, you bring your own gear. If you don't have one, we will probably sell something inexpensive, which they can take home,” he said.

ICE at Lumina will run until summer 2019.

RWM hopes to add more attractions like this in the future, to keep things exciting in a very competitive retail, hospitality, and gaming market.

“We hope to add more attractions to entice people to go here. Because let's face it, the area is a bit traffic, and far from places like Quezon City. You have to have a reason why you would go here. One of the reasons, other than gaming, are our shows or something like this,” Paz said.
