H'Hen Niê, who represented Vietnam at the Miss Universe 2018, received heaps of praise from netizens as she crowned her successor while walking barefoot and wearing only a plain traditional outfit.
Niê posted Sunday on Instagram a photo of herself during the coronation night of Miss Universe Vietnam Saturday night.
"From the bottom of my heart, I wanna say thank you," she wrote in the caption.
Niê, 27, received compliments from fellow beauty queens.
Adriana Paniagua, who represented Nicaragua at the 2018 Miss Universe, described Niê as a "true queen."
Miss World Malaysia 2018 Larissa Ping, meanwhile, said Niê was "an inspiration."
Netizens online also praised Niê for her apparent humility, pointing out how the beauty queen walked barefoot onstage and wore only a traditional dress, in contrast to the glittering gowns of the candidates in the background.
Niê was succeeded by Nguyễn Khánh Vân, who will represent Vietnam at Miss Universe 2020.
During Miss Universe 2018, which was won by the Philippines' Catriona Gray, Niê won the hearts of people online because of her inspiring story.
Niê was the only Vietnamese to finish in the top 5 of the pageant and was the first representative of her country from an ethnic minority group.
She overcame poverty, broke tradition by refusing to marry at the age of 14, and took several odd jobs to finance her studies.
