MANILA -- The Philippines' Gazini Ganados competed in the evening gown and national costume rounds at Miss Universe late Friday in the US (Saturday in Manila), in creations inspired by the Philippine Eagle.
Cebu-based couturier Cary Santiago made the gowns for Ganados. The 23-year-old model and elderly care advocate earlier told ABS-CBN News that in the weeks leading to the pageant, she flew back and forth between Manila and Cebu City to practice walking in the gowns.
The gold preliminary evening gown was cut similar to Ganado's hot pink gown at Binibining Pilipinas last July, the bust line shaped like a pair of wings.
The national costume was in silver, with a life-sized eagle on each of her shoulders. She ended the presentation by unfurling what looked like metal wings that fanned out from the bottom of her dress.
Ganados is competing for a back-to-back win to succeed Miss Universe Catriona Gray and secure the Philippines' fifth Miss Universe crown.
Miss Universe 2019 airs on Dec. 9 at 8 a.m. on ABS-CBN and on its streaming platform, iWant.
