MANILA — Nearly a week since she arrived in Atlanta, Georgia for the Miss Universe pageant, Philippine bet Gazini Ganados finally posed for a selfie with the reigning queen and compatriot Catriona Gray.
Ganados shared the snap on Instagram Thursday night, with the caption: “Mabuhay Philippines! Finally, a selfie with the Queen @catriona_gray. Thank you for bringing pride to our country!”
Ganados’ post quickly garnered tens of thousands of likes, with hundreds of comments cheering on the two queens and claiming a “back-to-back” win.
Ganados is looking to clinch a consecutive crown for the Philippines, to become the overall 5th Filipina Miss Universe.
If she manages the feat, the Philippines will become only the second country to do so, after the 2008-2009 wins of Venezuela.
The president of the Miss Universe Organization, Paula Shugart, has said it’s not impossible that a back-to-back success will be replicated.
“All you have to do is talk to Stefania Fernandez,” Shugart told ABS-CBN News’ Dyan Castillejo on Wednesday, referring to the 2009 winner from Venezuela.
“People didn’t think Venezuela could win two years in a row, and she did. It’s always about the individual, so, absolutely,” she said.
The Miss Universe coronation is scheduled on December 8 in Atlanta, Georgia, or December 9, 8 a.m. Manila time, with a live broadcast on ABS-CBN.
