MANILA – If you’re planning to do your Christmas gift shopping in Quiapo or Divisoria, make the most out of your visit by going on a food crawl in the city of Manila.
Check out these recommendations by JP Ordona, the man behind the Manilakad walking tours, as sampled by ABS-CBN News.
GLOBE LUMPIA HOUSE
Address: 740 Gonzalo Puyat Street, Santa Cruz, Manila
What to order: Fresh lumpia
Just a short walk from Quiapo church, this humble shop has been serving the best fresh lumpia in the city since the 1950s.
Each roll costs P20 (the “Kris TV” video above is dated August 2013) and is filled with ubod (heart of palm), crushed peanuts, and a homemade sauce. And trust us, one lumpia is not enough.
Address: 155-157 C. Palanca Street, Manila
What to order: Chinese cooked ham, ham skin chicharon
After shopping for clothes, trinkets, and other gifts, head to Excelente ham at C. Palanca Street for some hamon – considered the main centerpiece of the noche buena table.
And while you’re there, sample the other products offered at the shop, including the crispy ham skin chicharon.
KIM CHONG TIN HOPIA FACTORY
Address: 149 C. Palanca Street, Manila
What to order: Hopia mongo, hopia mongo with salted egg, hopia kondol with bacon
Just a few steps away from Excelente is Kim Chong Tin, often hailed as the best hopia shop this side of Manila.
Kim Chong Tin serves not just classic hopia flavors but also modern variants such as mongo with salted egg and kondol with bacon.
SHANGHAI FRIED SIOPAO
Address: Ongpin Street, Binondo, Manila
What to order: Fried siopao
There are many, many food options in Binondo, which is said to be the oldest Chinatown in the world. But if you’re looking for a quick bite, try this fried siopao along the busy Ongpin street – you won’t regret it.
Wash it all down with a cup of fresh sugar cane juice from the stall across the street.
GRAND CAFÉ 1919
Address: 117 Juan Luna Street, Binondo, Manila
What to order: Coffee and cake
This relatively new café is a refreshing change of pace from Binondo’s busy streets and many Chinese restaurants.
Enjoy a cup of coffee and a slice of chocolate cake before heading back to the hustle and bustle of the city of Manila.
SKY DECK VIEW BAR
Address: The Bayleaf Intramuros, Muralla corner Victoria Streets, Intramuros, Manila

Cap off your food crawl with dinner and drinks with a view of the historic city of Intramuros.
