MANILA – Demi-Leigh Nel-Peters of South Africa became emotional as she was crowned Miss Universe 2017 by her French predecessor, Iris Mittenaere, in Las Vegas on Sunday (Monday in Manila).
Nel-Peters, a 22-year-old business management graduate, ended a nearly four-decade drought for her country in the international pageant.
South Africa last won Miss Universe in 1978.
Here’s a look at her crowning moment and first walk as Miss Universe 2017:
Colombia’s Laura Gonzalez, an aspiring actress, placed first runner-up, while Jamaica’s Davina Bennett, a model with a marketing college degree, was second runner-up.
The Philippines’ Rachel Peters finished in the Top 10.
