Do you find yourself reverting back to Christmas tree designs you’ve used in the past? With the help of Metro Home host Anton Barretto, we’ll take you through some tips for finding new ways to spice up your decor. That way you’ll always be able to update your tree even by adding a few key pieces or changing the lights.
1. Find your theme for the year.
“Decide on a theme, a good start will be color. then explore the options that suit your aesthetic. Will it be a tree for kids, something elegant, whimsical, or classic,” enumerates Anton. “There are so many options out there, but once you decide, you can think of the elements that will be used to create the tree.”

Some ideas include color palette-centric accents such as the Brat green colors made popular by the Brat summer, hot pink trend from the ‘90s and 2000s revival, and even key 2024 colors like pastels. Retro disco decor is also quite popular, as inspired by the recent disco 70s-themed Opulence Ball, or adding bows to everything, which is a big 2024 trend.

2. Start adding the key elements.
“Stay focused and run to the Christmas store to buy the decor and lights. Mix and match according to your theme and color,” recommends Anton. And while this task can prove to be overwhelming as there will be many items to choose from, you can do it at your own pace.

“You can start with key elements like balls, ribbons, themed decor, and most important of all, the fillers—these would be berries, leafy sprays, pinecones, twigs, etc,” he says. “Fillers are sometimes overlooked but these add to the “fullness” of the tree.”

3. Lighting the tree is very important.
“I personally like the tree well-lit. My way of putting lights is to fill in as many sections in one branch of the tree so the lights weave through the leaves,” Anton explains. “Usually, for a nine-foot tree, I use 24-30 sets of lights, an important tip here is to get a light set that is end to end.” He minds us to read the inscription on the box because there is a maximum number of lights they recommend to be connected.

“Make sure the lights are LED so you conserve energy. Since you will be using multiple sets, put an extension cord with several outlets in the middle of the tree, fasten it to the main pole, and from there, you can plug it in directly. This will also make it easier for you to light up the tree with just 1 plug in the main outlet,” shares Anton.

4. Get the right tools: pliers, wires, and scissors.
“Handy tools to have will be pliers, so you can cut the long stems of some items that you will be buying like flowers, berries, leaves, etc,” he says. Another important item is floral wire. “I prefer to replace the strings that ornaments come with and use floral wire, cut to the desired length, making it easier to fasten the ornaments to the tree. This is also a way to secure and make the decor more foolproof: meaning it will be hard for kids (and pets) to remove the ornaments, and with wire, you can control the length of how the item will hang.” Finally, don’t underscore the need for scissors, so you can cut ribbons and other softer materials.

5. Play with scale.
“My bonus tip will be to play with scale, don’t limit yourself with putting small ornaments on the top and bigger ornaments on the bottom,” he says. “Practice “equal rights” all sizes and all shapes can go from top to bottom and try using bigger accents because they make the tree look more stunning.”
