MANILA -- She was last seen on the Atlantis Theatrical stage seven years ago as Margaret White in "Carrie."
And now Menchu Lauchengco-Yulo is back performing for the theater company, leading the cast of Atlantis' upcoming production of the Tony and Grammy award-winning musical "The Band's Visit."
"The best part is working with Bobby Garcia as my director," Lauchengco-Yulo said of her return to the Atlantis stage.
"I have always enjoyed working with Atlantis and I am glad that I have this opportunity again after seven years. It's been way too long."
For his part, Garcia, who directed the reinvented "Sweeney Todd" starring Lea Salonga and Jett Pangan, said he is excited to work with Lauchengco-Yulo again.
"In this profession, you never know when you will work with people again. Everything needs to be right. The right show at the right time. I can’t wait to get into the rehearsal room and get to work with Menchu on what I have no doubt will be another unforgettable creation in her illustrious career,” he said.
Based on the acclaimed film, "The Band's Visit" tells the story of an Egyptian police band that is set to perform in Israel, only to end up stranded in a remote town.
In the Atlantis production, Launchengco-Yulo plays the role of Dina, a charismatic cafe owner who welcomes the band.
"I remember watching 'The Band’s Visit' in New York and falling in love with the show," she said of the musical, which opened on Broadway in 2018. "I told myself, 'I hope it gets produced in Manila cause I would love to play Dina.' And now it is happening."
"The Band's Visit" will open Atlantis' 2020 season and will run from March 13 to 29 at the Carlos P. Romulo Auditorium, RCBC Plaza, Makati City.
Other cast members will be announced by Atlantis soon.
