MANILA – It’s the middle of September and it’s a packed weekend.
From theater productions to concerts, here are some events that you can check out.

1. ABS-CBN BALL
When: September 14, starting at 6 p.m.
Where: Catch the event on Metro Channel and on Metro.Style’s YouTube channel
This year’s ABS-CBN Ball will be for the benefit of Bantay Bata 163’s Bantay Edukasyon Program. The event will also honor the late Gina Lopez, the founder of Bantay Bata and other programs under the ABS-CBN Foundation’s Sagip Kapamilya and Bantay Kalikasan.
As in the past years, the ABS-CBN Ball will gather the brightest and most relevant stars in Philippine show business. Industry watchers and fans are invited to watch the pre-show at 6 p.m. Saturday and the live red carpet coverage at 7 p.m on Metro Channel.
A livestream of the event will also be available on Metro.Style’s YouTube channel.
2. PISTA NG PELIKULANG PILIPINO
When: September 13 to 19
Where: Over 200 major cinemas nationwide
The Pista ng Pelikulang Pilipino (PPP) is back for its third run, this time coinciding with the 100th anniversary of Philippine cinema.
Organized by the Film Development Council of the Philippines in partnership with the National Cinema Association of the Philippines, the PPP is a week-long celebration where new quality genre Filipino films are screened for one week in all regular cinemas nationwide.
Support the local industry by watching all 10 participating movies. No foreign film will be screened during PPP except in specialty cinemas.
3. CHORAL CAYABYAB TRIBUTE AND THANKSGIVING CONCERT
When: September 14, 6 p.m. to 9 p.m.
Where: Church of the Gesu, Ateneo de Manila University
Choral Cayabyab is celebrating its 17th anniversary with a show that will pay tribute to National Artist and Ramon Magsaysay awardee Ryan Cayabyab.
The public is invited to a thanksgiving mass and a mini concert featuring Cayabyab’s liturgical and choral works. Admission is free.
4. MANILA INTERNATIONAL BOOK FAIR
When: September 11 to 15, 10 a.m. to 6 p.m.
Where: SMX Convention Center, SM Mall of Asia
The largest and longest-running book fair in the Philippines is back for its 40th run.
Expect to find over 100 exhibitors ranging from leading bookstore chains to local independent publishers spread across two floors of exhibit space.
Book signing events will also be held throughout the fair, with acclaimed authors Cristina Pantoja-Hidalgo, Angelo R. Lacuesta, and Mookie Katigbak-Lacuesta expected to attend.
Local actresses Heart Evangelista and Dimples Romana are also among the celebrities who are set to grace book-related affairs.
5. PHILIPPINE BULLMASTIFF FEDERATION ALL-BREED DOG SHOW
When: September 14 to 15, 9 a.m. to 7:30 p.m.
Where: PCCI Activity Center, Marikina City
The Philippine Bullmastiff Federation is holding a two-day event for dog lovers and dog breeders across the country.
Pet lovers are invited to a PBF specialty dog show and an all-breed dog show. Pet owners can also bring their furry friends for onsite litter/kennel name registrations, memberships, listing, and micro-chipping.
6. UPSTART’S ‘COMPANY: A MUSICAL COMEDY’
When: Fridays, Saturdays, and Sundays from September 13 to Sept 22
Where: Globe Auditorium, Maybank Performing Arts Theater, BGC Arts Center, Taguig
Upstart returns with a brand new production of “Company,” the well-loved Broadway classic that is currently making a splash in London’s West End.
A musical about love, marriage, friendship, and loneliness, “Company” is one of theater legend Stephen Sondheim’s most beloved works.
Upstart’s version is directed by Topper Fabregas and features theater veterans like Michael Williams, Menchu Lauchengco-Yulo, Cathy Azanza-Dy, and Caisa Borromeo, with OJ Mariano playing the central character of Bobby.
7. PHILIPPINE PHILHARMONIC ORCHESTRA’S 37TH CONCERT SEASON OPENING
When: September 13
Where: CCP Main Theater
The Philippine Philharmonic Orchestra’s 37th Concert Season 2019-2020 will open on September 13 at the Cultural Center of the Philippines’ Main Theater with guest soloist Japanese pianist Noriko Ogawa under the baton of Maestro Yoshikazu Fukumura.
The program for the concert includes Wolfgang Amadeus Mozart’s “Don Giovanni Overture,” Sergei Prokofiev’s “Piano Concerto No. 3,” and Antonin Dvorak’s “Symphony No. 7.”
8. PHILIPPINE OPERA COMPANY’S ‘PASSION’
When: September 14 to 29
Where: Carlos P. Romulo Auditorium, RCBC Plaza, Makati City
For its 20th anniversary celebration, the Philippine Opera Company will present its version of the 1994 Tony Award winner for Best Musical, “Passion.”
From the music and lyrics by Stephen Sondheim and book by James Lapine and based on the 1981 Italian film “Passione D’Amore,” the production is described as a journey through the many shades and mysteries of love.
9. ‘HARRY POTTER AND THE SORCERER’S STONE’ CONCERT
When: September 14 to 15
Where: The Theatre at Solaire
For the first time in Manila, audiences will experience ABS-CBN Philharmonic Orchestra performing John Williams’ music to the entire first film in the series.
Potterheads and music fans will be able to relive the magic of the entire film in high- definition on a 40-foot screen, all while Gerard Salonga conducts the ABS-CBN Philharmonic Orchestra in performing live, to picture, every note from one of the most beloved film series in history.
