NEW YORK — “Felix Starro,” the first off-Broadway musical made by Filipino-Americans, is making a big buzz in New York City’s theater world.
The history-making musical follows the story of a character named Felix Starro, a famous and favorite faith healer for the stars and politicians in the Philippines who hit rock bottom in the '80s.
It presents a story of faith, family, love, betrayal, and what it means to be undocumented in America.
“It deals with becoming undocumented immigrants, it’s so relevant especially now,” said writer Jessica Hagedorn.
New York’s avid Broadway and musical theater fans are not always easy to impress.
But for some, “Felix Starro” delivered on opening night.
“It’s completely unique, but also totally universal and accessible, but so specific,” said audience member Stephanie Cohen.
“It was an entire story in a world that I knew nothing about but felt so at home in,” added musical theater fan Shannon Tyo.
“Felix Starro” is now playing at the Theater Row NYC until September 21.
