MANILA – “Ang Huling El Bimbo,” which features the music of the ‘90s rock band Eraserheads, closed its final run at the Newport Performing Arts Theater on Sunday night.
But as early as now, Resorts World Manila is giving theatergoers something to look forward to with the announcement of another original Filipino musical, this time showcasing the songs of the “Manila Sound" pioneer, the Hotdog band.
Speaking to the audience during the last day of “Ang Huling El Bimbo,” Resorts World Manila president and CEO Kingson Sian said the musical, titled “Bongga Ka Day,” will open in mid-2020.
“The success of this show ('Ang Huling El Bimbo') proves that there’s an audience and market for long-running original Filipino productions in a big theater like this,” he said. “That gives us a lot of encouragement and motivation to continue what we’re doing.”
Sian went on: “Since sinamahan niyo kami today in our last day of ‘Huling El Bimbo,’ gusto ko namang mauna kayo na malaman niyo kung ano ‘yung next production namin next year in 2020, opening mid-next year. It will be another original Filipino musical with another Philippine iconic band.”
After his speech, a rendition of “Bongga Ka Day” – one of Hotdog’s biggest hits – was performed live on stage.
Formed in the ‘70s, Hotdog is known for its pop songs with a true Filipino sensibility.
Aside from “Bongga Ka Day,” other hit songs from the band include “Manila,” “Annie Batungbakal,” “Ikaw ang Miss Universe ng Buhay Ko,” and “Langit Na Naman,” to name a few.
