Rod, 63, finished his elementary studies under the Alternative Learning System while in jail.
BACOLOD CITY - A 63-year-old inmate has completed his elementary studies under the Alternative Learning System (ALS) of the Department of Education.
The inmate, identified only as alias Rod, a native of Barangay Culipapa in Negros Occidental, beamed with pride as he walked up the stage during their graduation ceremony at the Metro Bacolod District Jail.
Rod was only able to study until the third grade before he was imprisoned.
He said he found the opportunity to finish his elementary studies under the ALS program.
Of the 19 who graduated in the 5th Completion Exercise on Monday, Rod was the only one who completed elementary, while the rest graduated from high school.
Chief Inspector Jonairy Sitchon, warden of the Metro Bacolod District Jail, said the bureau has long since inked a partnership with the Department of Education (DepEd) to help inmates who failed to finish their studies.
Sitchon said students are expected to finish studies in 10 months under the ALS. Having just graduated from elementary, Rod already signed up for the high school program.
