MANILA - The Museo Pambata is calling on President Rodrigo Duterte to stop the construction of a casino gaming facility beside it, the Luneta Park, and the Army Navy Heritage Building.

Through a petition on website Change.org, Museo Pambata is seeking 1,000 signatures against the construction, saying it "is a threat to our historical and cultural heritage, and endangers the morality and development of our children."

"Furthermore, it violates the R.A. No. 979, amended by R.A. No. 1224, which prohibits the establishment of a casino within a radius of fifty (50) lineal meters from any public building, school, hospital, or church," the museum said.

"Please help us in this endeavor to cancel the casino's PAGCOR contract and cease the construction of the casino gaming facility."

As of writing, the petition had 555 signatures.

Some netizens voiced out their opposition to the casino construction via the website, with many saying it is "not appropriate" and "outrageous" to build a casino in an area where children frequently go.

"A casino should not be beside a children's museum because it will affect our children's values," said Quincy Castillo.

"I went a few times to Museo Pambata and this museum offers great time and discoveries to children. Having a casino right beside it would really be a shame," Anne-Sylvie Laurent said.
