MANILA – (UPDATED) Reigning Miss Universe Pia Wurtzbach and President Rodrigo Duterte finally met on Monday and discussed the possibility of holding the next edition of the international pageant here in the Philippines.
In a video posted by the Presidential Broadcast Staff-Radio Television Malacañang on Facebook, Wurtzbach is seen shaking hands with the President at the Palace’s Music Room.
“The President and Ms. Wurtzbach talked about the similarities between them, with both of them hailing from Mindanao and winning their respective titles as the first Mindanaoan President and first Mindanaoan Ms. Universe. They also discussed about the possibility of holding the Ms. Universe 2016 competition in the Philippines,” the video’s description read.
Also seen in the courtesy call were Tourism Secretary Wanda Teo, undersecretary Kat de Castro, and Miss Universe Organization’s Paula Shugart, Shawn Maclaine and Esther Swan.
Wurtzbach, who was wearing a pink jumpsuit by local designer Bessie Besana, posted a selfie with President Duterte on her Instagram page.
“What an honor it was to meet our new President, Rodrigo Duterte,” she wrote.
Wurtzbach arrived in Manila from New York City over the weekend.

Teo earlier said that Duterte has approved in principle the proposal to have the Philippines as the next host country for Miss Universe.
The last time the country hosted the Miss Universe pageant was in 1994.
