MANILA — "Dirty old men" are nothing new to pageants, Miss Universe 1969 Gloria Diaz admits, when asked for her reaction to a documentary exposing indecent proposals hounding beauty queens and aspiring titlists.
In the CNA Insider documentary, resigned Binibining Pilipinas-World 2008 Janina San Miguel detailed the offers she received, like P3 million for a "one-night stand" or P25 million for a "girlfriend" arrangement that comes with a car and a condominium unit.
Diaz, 69, wasn't surprised by the exposé, saying she had her share of indecent proposals during her pageant days, and would observe similar practices later on.
"Talagang maraming DOM (dirty old men) around. In fact, I'd be surprised kung walang DOM or whatever. There's always indecent proposals all over. Most of the beauty contestants almost expect it!" she said.
Diaz spoke on the topic Tuesday during a media conference for "Beauty Queens." In the iWant series, premiering on July 14, Diaz portrays a beauty queen who is grooming her daughters to follow in her footsteps.
Recalling how she dealt with "dirty old men," Diaz said: "When they're around, it's okay. It doesn't insult me. I don't feel pressured. I just enjoy the attention and I go on with it!"
"It's not mind-boggling or anything. Hindi ka naman binabastos, e, at walang pilitan."
Diaz did not give details of the offers or advances she got during her time.
She added, in jest, that even at her age now, "They all want to be on top of the universe!"
Two other pageant titlists, who portray Diaz's daughters in "Beauty Queens" — Miss Universe-Philippines 2016 Maxine Medina and Reina Hispanoamericana 2017 Winwyn Marquez — were also asked for their reaction to the documentary.
Both said they have no similar firsthand experience.
"Ako kasi, pinalaki ako ng magulang ko nang maayos," Medina said. "I know what is right or wrong, so nag-di-distance ako if I know that's not right."
Noting that her "worst" pageant experience was losing her makeup for the competition, Marquez did not discount the possibility of indecent proposals still hounding her contemporaries.
"It's just unfortunate and sad na may ibang tao na tina-target 'yung weakness ng mga sumasali sa beauty pageants. Kasi gusto nila manalo, ginagawa nilang reason 'yun para sa indecent proposal," she said.
"I've never experienced it. Wala rin akong narinig na kaibigan ko na ganoon ang nangyari. Pero kung na-experience ng ibang candidates 'yun, ang sad lang na ganoon ang tingin nila sa mga candidates."
Offering advice to candidates who may have their own encounters in the future, Marquez said, "Sana tumanggi sila, kasi walang magandang kalalabasan 'yun, even if ipangako nila na mananalo ka."
"It's not worth it."
