MANILA – Heart Evangelista recently surprised her fans and followers after sharing that she has been taking HCG shots, which is known for treating fertility issues.

Binibining Pilipinas 2019 candidate and nurse Maria Isabela Galeria of Sorsogon – the same province where Evangelista’s husband now serves as governor – can be seen administering HCG shots to the actress.

“Look who dropped by! Bb. Sorsogon Maria Isabela Galeria joined me for coffee and was kind enough to be my nurse for the day!” Evangelista said.

Some netizens could not help but ask Evangelista – who suffered a miscarriage last year – if she is planning to have another baby or is already pregnant given that she is taking HCG shots.

According to Medical News Today, HCG or human chorionic gonadotropin “is a hormone that the female body produces during pregnancy to help the embryo and fetus develop.”

“Doctors sometimes prescribe HCG injections for treating fertility issues in women and hormone problems such as hypogonadism in men,” read a post on the health website.

A fan wished that Evangelista would “get the magic baby dust soon,” prompting the actress to clear things once and for all.

She simply said: “It’s not for that. It’s a weight loss program.”

Replying to another netizen, Evangelista explained that she needs to shed some pounds for her upcoming movie.

“I gained 20 pounds since my wedding. Need to bring back my old body for my movie,” she said.

While it is normally associated with pregnancy, HCG shots have become popular for weight loss after claims of reducing feelings of hunger and redistributing body fat from “problem areas” such as thighs and hips.

Medical News Today noted, however, that there is no scientific evidence to back up such claims.
