MANILA — Throngs of hobbyists and collectors flocked selected Jollibee stores Tuesday night as they awaited the midnight release of Jollibee's newest Funko Pop variant coinciding with Independence Day.
The figure is exclusive to Jollibee stores, released as a limited-time offer promo from June 12 to June 21.
Some 400 people on Tuesday night opted to line up at the store’s E. Rodriguez branch in Quezon City, where various programs, games, and dance numbers were held.
Others, such as Mikkel Gamboa and Mikee Suing, were in line as early as 2 p.m. on Tuesday. The two early birds wore barong as encouraged in the Funko interest group, Funko Funatic Philippines (FFP).
"May nagsabi sa'min na may [pakulo] kapag may barong," Gamboa said.
Other branches which had big midnight launches were Bonifacio Global City, Cebu, Davao City, Pampanga, and Cavite.
People waited in line at the said branches for two to four hours. Collectors paid P950 for the figure and a six-piece bucket of Jollibee’s signature Chickenjoy.
The release of the first Jollibee Funko Pop came with much fanfare, as it was released in the Asia Pop Comic Con in November 2018. The figures were released on a later date in selected Jollibee stores, gathering long lines anew.
Funko is an American toy company which has held partnerships with Marvel, Disney, DC Comics, and many more.
FFP will soon release a "flocked" version of the pop in "ToyCon 2019" at the SMX Convention Center in Pasay.
