MANILA – Several national pageants have already postponed their respective competitions amid quarantines imposed due to the coronavirus pandemic.
Speaking during the online podcast QueenTuhan which went live on Tuesday, former Miss Universe Pia Wurtzbach weighed in on the matter and how she thinks the global crisis would affect the world of pageantry.
“Dapat lang mag-postpone talaga. Tama lang naman na nag-postpone pero no need to cancel. No need to panic for the girls,” she said.
Wurtzbach, however, noted that the bigger question pageant organizers are facing right now is not so much of “when” but “how.”
“Sa tingin ko, the question is paano kapag nag-start na. It’s not so much of when. Alam naman natin na matutuloy iyan eh. Sa Pilipinas pa, hindi puwedeng walang pageant. Pero paano?” she said.
According to Wurtzbach, she has heard suggestions of doing online pageants but she is personally uncertain if that kind of format would work. Instead, the beauty queen has another idea in mind.
“Possible na pwedeng mangyari is they will keep all the girls in a hotel. Imagine this, in a hotel, magkakahiwalay sila so napra-practice pa rin 'yung social distancing. And then they will do the activity, the live, the program sa isang ballroom tapos closed set siya,” she said.
With that kind of set up, Wurtzbach said only the essential people would have to be inside the ballroom sans any audience.
“The girls could get ready in their rooms. Sa pageant naman, we get ready on our own. Hindi mo kailangan ng glam team. They get ready on their own, they come down, they do the swimsuit tapos naka-stream siya. And then they do the same for the gown. I guess for the Q&A, you can space them apart and ask the questions,” she added.
For Wurtzbach, this might be the most feasible arrangement for a beauty pageant considering the new normal everyone has to comply to.
